reinstalling win 98

By mel ·
Trying to reinstall win 98 I get the error:

Err Msg: Your Computer Already Has an Operating System

And says this version of 98 is not for doing upgrades.

Went to DOS and tried and got the same message.

What files is telling the setup program I am trying to do an upgrade????

Which file do I need to fix or remove so it will do an installation??

I have ran into this a few times. I usually just remove the \WINDOWS\ folder from the computer and then proceed with the install. If I get to the point that I have to reinstall Windows, then I have no reason to try and salvage any installed applications. They're going to have to be re-installed anyway.

Hopes this helps...

The above answer will work. I do believe that it is looking for the win.com file. If you rename that file I think it should also work. Also you can run the reinstallation from within 98 and do a replace and restore upgrade to your current installation. Sort fixes missing and/or corrupted files.

The first answer will work. Another way is to run the setup from a dos prompt with the
/id switch (ex setup /id). It will ignore detection when installing the os. Hope this helps

there is one way to keep your settings and install your version of windows
first back up your registry and INI files, then you can delete windows and leave program files, afterwords install windows, then replace the registry and files, the command scanregw will ask you to backup your registry in a file, this offcorse can be used if you don't know how to manually backup (copy) the registry
