Remember asking what “social media” is for, Palmetto?
Lockedby ansugisalas · about 10 years, 10 months ago
At the time, I didn’t have an answer, but I have done some research.
Facebook is for maintaining relationships with semi-estranged family and fair-weather friends, mainly so you can keep each other updated on really important stuff, such as photos of what you had for lunch. If you prefer not to know what such people eat for lunch, better skip it.
LinkedIn is about general-purpose non-specific brown-nosing. It is great for keeping those sucking-up muscles trimmed. If you don’t want to suck up to anybody, better skip it.
Google+ is about finding completely random people who happen to have the same interests as you, or who produce interesting text or photographs or who attract interesting discussions or otherwise tickle your fancy. If you don’t want to do that, better skip it.
Like, if someone was to fancy plants of the family Nepenthaceae, one could join this community:
https://plus.google.com/u/0/communities/117037123781049426104
or this one:
https://plus.google.com/u/0/communities/108732200169956427257
or this one:
https://plus.google.com/u/0/communities/105730273526169818962It’s all about fancy.

So is that some kind of crack at me?

In reply to Remember asking what “social media” is for, Palmetto?
Not that i would understand of course so you’ll need to be a lot more down to earth as I’m not overly clever.
I work with Computers so you have to explain everything as if I will not understand. :p
Of course regardless I wouldn’t consider joining any of these either. :0

Nah, just using a familiar example of niche interests.

I could have used motor sports, but I can never remember which ones are lame and which ones are not, so I went with something with universal appeal 😉 :^0

None of them are lame.

Well, none of them that are measured against a clock or other objective goal. Anything judged (like motorcycle stunts, monstor truck free-styling, skateboard tricks, ice skating, or gymnastics) is an art, not a sport. That doesn’t mean the participants aren’t atheletes.

Anyway, when not knowing anything about a subject, I prefer to not use examples from that subject 😉

Vaguely and in general.

In reply to Remember asking what “social media” is for, Palmetto?
If I can’t remember any specific question, it only means I don’t remember asking them, not that they weren’t asked.
I don’t see why anyone would want to keep up with semi-estranged family or fair-weather friends, or keep them updated either. I’ve read too many posts from people who have found LinkedIn to be useful for me to pooh-pooh it. But I’ve also tried it enough to determine there’s no value for me. I may get around to taking a look at Google+ one day, but I’m active enough here to satisfy my on-line itch and something about getting a Google account trips my long-range sensors.
I notice you didn’t include Twitter 🙂

I’ve had a good birding spring. There was a prothonotary warbler at the Darlington race, a swallow-tailed kite flew over work last week, and a loggerhead shrike has been hanging out at nearby farm since February.

I’m not very knowledgeable about birds, but I do like to watch them. Particularly fond of ducks for some reason.
I don’t get to close to birds much anymore tho, after the almost famous episode at TR. LOL

If you go too far down and get stuck with ‘Take Offline’ instead of ‘Reply’, go back up to the previous level and reply to it.

The “Take Offline” creates a post in the Water Cooler area. But since this is a water cooler topic, won’t that create some sort of loop? Kind of like “Crossing the streams” and having a total protonic reversal event 😀

social media for companies
by cdurai · about 10 years, 10 months ago
In reply to Remember asking what “social media” is for, Palmetto?
Social media engagement for companies or brands is different. Companies use social media for building their brand and its management. By proper monitoring and analyzing the ‘Shout’ (sentiments) in the social media they can change their business or service strategy. They can use shout analytics for the sentiment analysis in the social media monitoring.

“They can use shout analytics for the sentiment analysis in the social media monitoring.”
We have a winner! Three management-speak phrases in one sentence! I award extra points for ‘sentiment analysis’; that’s a new one on me.
With that said, I have no doubt that there are some departments in some companies that gain value from social media. That doesn’t mean it has value for all companies, or for individuals on a personal level.

Facebook, is a place for the insecure, the self conscious, the shut-ins and the sick to be someone they WANT to be. They can make friends that they would never be able to befriend in real life, they can get sympathy from total strangers that they consider friends (when sick, in hospital, left by a spouse etc.)
Linkedin Initially a good choice for a business networking portal. Now it has turned into Facebook for people who wish they were in business. If you don’t follow suit and endorse everyone you get messages from, if you don’t allow unknown people to endorse you and if you use it strictly as the tool it was designed for, you can still stand out from the crowd and gain credibility for your achievements. If you join the masses, you lose credibility and its ‘a useless website.
Google+: Is a link near G-Drive where some people waste a lot of time, senselessly and without any positive outcome. If you’ve lost all of your pretend friends on Facebook there’s Google+ where you can start again.
