Remote Call Procedure termination

By bfadero ·
I have a pentium 3, 1.1GHz, 240MB ram, 30GB laptop running on windows XP home editiion. My problem is anytime I connect to the internet using dial-up, after about 3-5 minutes I get a message saying that the Remote Call procedure terminated unexpectedly and that the system is automaically shutting down within a minute. It also says the shut down process was initiated by NT/SYSTEM. This prevents me from connecting to the internet with the laptop.

Sounds like you have the Blaster worm. To fix it, go into your task manager and find the MSBLASTER.exe process and end it. Next, right click My Computer, choose Manage, click the plus sign next to Services and Applications and then choose Services. Scroll down to Remote Procedure Call and double click on it. On the menu of that screen, choose Recovery, there you will find three drop down menus which all say "Restart the Computer". Change each of these to restart service, this will prevent your computer from rebooting. Next, right click on your dial up icon in My Network Places Properties and choose properties again. Go to the advanced tab at the end and enable the firewall, this will prevent the worm from trying to find other computers on the internet to infect.
Get on the internet and go to any anti virus vendor and download their blaster fix program and follow those instructions on removing this worm. If something is still not clear, add a comment or email me please.
Good luck!

Mike

You may have rejected the answer, but to me this IS the Blaster. If you say you can run the machine normally but it dies on I-net connection, you're just plain lucky. Two folks in my network caught this worm and their experiences were 100% identical to yours...
However, with the machine booting up normally, just run the FixBlast.exe (Symantec's website) or tsc.exe (TrendMicro Damage Cleanup) and then the Microsoft Blaster vulnerability patch (KB823980). You will find detailed manuals accompanying these utilities.
Good luck,
wyrm
