Remote connection thru D-Link router

By cstaunton ·
I am trying to make a remote connection (such as net meeting) from one XP pro to another XP pro machine. The machine I am trying to connect to has a D-link wireless router and is connected thru a DSL connection. Is there a good step by step reference for doing this. Hopefully it will include a way of doing this connection in a secure way.

Well, you may not like the solution.

See the page here:

and also check out the message threads at the bottom of the page for your specific D-Link.

While it should not be a problem, there have been many who would not choose PCAnywhere as a remote solution. But, you can open the ports required on your DLink and forward them to the PC in question, as long as it has a static IP address.

A VPN would seem to be the way to go if you are concerned about security, but can be problematic with a dynamic IP address as found with many DSL providers. XP allows you to create an outgoing VPN connection, and most later SOHO routers will enable PPTP and IPSec connections.

I would say the difficult part would be to keep track of the target PC's IP address. I use FollowMEIP found at followmeip.org. You can access your public IP at any time from any internet connected computer. If the PC you are connecting to is also yours, then that shouldn't be a problem.

Once the VPN is established, you can use Remote Desktop normally. You may still need to configure the router to forward port 3389 requests to the private IP address of the target PC.
