Removing Programs if Uninstall Failed

By Doug ·
Is there a way to remove programs that will not be removed via Add/Remove Programs within Win XP? I do have disks for 2 programs and they are taking up space.

Hi

Have you tried contacting the program maker - often they will provide instructions on how to manually uninstall their program.

Which program is it?

Hi there,
there are two things I would try here:
1) reinstall the apps into the same directory (i.e. over the top) and then try to uninstall them
2) if they are msi installers, you can use the microsoft uninstaller http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb;en-us;290301 I would strongly advise a full, current, verified backup of your data before you attempt anything though.

Hello,

I've managed to remove programs in the past by popping in the setup CD and running the setup.exe program with a /U (uninstall) switch via the Start > Run option.

If none of the previous answers work...

Edit your registry to remove all traces of each program (search for the name of each program and delete all references), then remove the directories left by these programs (probably in c:\program files).

And as always when working with the Registry, back it up before doing any editing.

You can also try the following-
Delete the program folder ->
Reboot ->
Run Crap Cleaner- it will look for the invalid registry entries and present you with a list->
Delete all that relate to your now deleted program ->
Reboot.

There is also a program called "Your Uninstaller" that you can drag the unwanted program to and drop it in. I have found that while it is more convenient, I still want to comb the registry for "leftovers".
