rendundant DHCP with reserved IP's

By rolf ·
I would like redundant DHCP servers. I have static/reserved IP's for printers. Do I recreate seperate scope in backup DHCP server and make same IP reservations or is there another or better method. Need redundancy and have static IP's.

Hi,
The key to redundancy is to split your range of IP addresses 50\50 across each server. Reserved addresses should be specified on each server, note that it is not required for the reservation to use an IP address within the scope, as long as it is within the range of the subnet. IE if your range is 10.20.30.10 to 10.20.30.40
then server 1 has 10.20.30.10 to 20, and server 2 has 10.20.30.21 to 40. The reservation could be 10.20.30.9 - outside the scope but on the same subnet and you can specify it on both servers. Alternatively, the reservation could be 10.20.30.11. In this case the reservation can be be placed on both servers which will give it out successfully, even though it is not part of the range specific to server2. Note thatyou will need to exclude the specific address from the range in server1 if this is the case.
