Replace W2K server?

By ldregely ·
What is the best way to replace a W2K server that is the first DC? I am buying a new server and would like the new server to be the number 1 DC and the current server to be number 2 DC.

Just install the second server as a new domain controller in the existing domain. After your installation, you move the FSMO/Operations Master roles to your new domain controller and make it a Global Catalog server. Detail on how to do these steps are well documented in the HELP files.

install the new server as a bdc (backup domain controller). Let the dasebase replicate and run dcpromo.exe from the run menu. this will allow you to become the PDC(primary domain controller and demote the old pdc to a bdc. I have done this severaltimes with out a problem.
