Its a bit map image but it has a sys file extension. I think its logo.sys and logow.sys in the windows directory.

You can create your own Logo.sys file and put it in the boot drive's root directory or, if the drive is compressed, in the root directory of the host for the boot drive.

There are some requirements you must follow in order for Windows to use the Logo.sys file. 1) It must be 320 by 400 pixel. 2) It must be a 256-color Windows bitmap file.

If there is no Logo.sys file (or if it can't find a good Logo.sys file - i.e.: the file doesn't follow to the above mentioned requirements), then Windows 98 will extract the logo from Io.sys file. Never update or modify the Io.sys file!

The logo.sys file is the MS opening screen and the logow.sys file is the shutdown screen. These can both be easily edited by accessing them through MSPaint. You can import your corporate logo or whatever you plan to use into Paint as a bitmap file and then save is as logo.sys/logow.sys into your C:\windows file. Just remember to rename your current logo files with a different extension just in case you want them back some day.

All of the above are correct, but I would add one more fact to Tink's answer:
It must be 320 by 400 pixel. But the image should start out as 640X400, then squeezed to 320X400. If you put a standard 320X400 image as your logo.sys, it will appear stretched (side to side) so you need to first squeeze it so when stretched, it will appear normal.
