Restore the network due to disaster

Well your scenario leaves out a little to be considered. For instance when you say "Backbone" switch - you referring to your 'Net connection or your LAN backbone?

Obviously if you mean the LAN backbone that is the first device to bring back online - no back, no network.

This appears to be a NT network you describe. Here's the order...

1. PDC - REQUIRED in NT to be first one, you have no choice - it *IS* the domain.

2. SQL - This is your database server, so this is a critical system. You need to get this online ASAP before you can restore other systems to get your company working again.

3. Financial - ALWAYS restore critical systems first, chances are you can stall Internet access and email for short while and not lose the company money (again this changes if you would of specified this was an e-Commerce driven company - most companies are not however.)

4. HR - The next syste is HR, this mostly likely houses benefits/payroll/attendance data so its the next logical oneto work on getting up. Again, the company can be without email for an hour or two and not suffer too much, but if your HR database is linked to recording employee time punches and payroll tracking you need to get this fairly fast.

5. Internet Router - Now you can relax abit knowing critical systems are up and people are back to work again. You would work on the Internet Router now.

6. Mail Server - Finally you'd restore the mail server.

Keep in mind you asked only the order in which you restore systems and the reason why..but the actual practice would involve more steps.

Like resetting your UPS boxes, checking log files to find out WHY the "disaster" took down your network, scanning drives for corrupted files, doing an immediate backup of critical systems on boot. Then you have to check drive integrity, test all systems before you announce them as "RESTORED".
