Rogue Wireless Devices

By don_andrews ·
We are seeing a few rogue wireless devices pop up in our environment. We found them by complete accident. I am wondering what others are doing and if there are any tools to help me monitor my buildings for people bringing in Access Points and installing them without authorization.

You'll need to constantly walk around your place with a laptop and wireless detection software. Two free ones come to mind: netstumbler and kismet which are available at:

I like netstumbler. But this may be a neverending battle. A better solution is to have a company policy against unauthorized access points using the security argument as justification. Or else you'll spend a lot of time looking for these rouge access points.

I assume you already enabled WEP. Second, you can limit access by MAC address on most systems. Its tedious but it will keep people out.
