routing problem

By bitsaus ·
Hi Guys,

Currently I have setup WIN2000 Server to a VPN and the internet using 2 seperate modems

Problem I have now is with routing. Modem 1 is connected to a VPN while modem 2 is connected to the internet.

When i connect modem 1 THEN modem 2, I have access to both the VPN and the internet.

BUT

If I connect modem 2 first, and then modem 1, I get access to the VPN but not the internet. It appears that all traffic tries to go through the VPN connection and doesnt try the Internetconnection at all. I think this is a problem with routing.

Question I guess is, how do I force requests to the internet to go through the internet modem, or requests for the VPN to go through the VPN modem?

This is becoming somewhat of an urgent problem that needs to be fixed.

Thanks in Advance

If the problem has to do with routing you would use the "route" command.

route -p ADD 192.168.10.0 MASK 255.255.255.0 192.168.11.1 METRIC 2 IF 1

This command would add a premanent route to send packets coming from 192.168.10.0 to the gateway 192.168.11.1 through interface 1.

run route -? for further information.

Hope this helps

the problem is that when you dail up, that dial up becomes your default connection. and since it's a dial up connection, i'm also assuming that it's dhcp, which may mean your default gateway may change. so problem is you don't have a default gateway. you can manually route the traffic, but the problem is the default gateway could be different everytime you dial in. so you're kind stuck. you can't use a routing statement because you don't have a static ip... so get dsl or cable modem or isdn.
