Look for bugs fixes from SP5 to SP6a, it is possible that you need to update, although I can't personally say that will fix it. (I skipped over SP5 because of the amount of bugs found in it, I went from 4 to SP6a)
Another idea would be to sync the PDC with the BDC in Server Manager incase RPC is dependant on Netlogon, and of course good old Proxy Server, if you are running it or some other firewall product on the server you could be blocking the port for RPC. All else fails, call MS or scour your event viewer for other possible dependencies.

Has it been good before??? What has changed??? First off, open Control Panel and open services. Make sure Remote Procedure Call (RPC) locator is set to manual and the Remote Procedure Call (RPC) service is set to automatic. Reboot. To further troubleshoot, set your Spooler Service to manual and reboot, if the problem goes away, you have an issue with you printing subsystem (JetDirect issues, spooler file corruption, etc..). Are you running Seagate Backup Exec? This has caused issues in the pastfor me, and a simple program update did the trick.

When attempting to open the "Microsoft Windows Network" icon under under the "Entire Network" icon in Backup Selections, you get the following error: "The RPC server is unavailable."
