Save info off old Hard Drive not in use

By FIELDHUNTER1949 ·
I am trying to remove all info good or bad off my old computer IBM APTIVA 2142-s6h. It is currently not in use and is not running at this time. The HD is Quantum 6.4 and I would like to be able to store info on CD format. I have my new computer with CDRW DELL
8100. It seems like a simple thing it is not lighting any light bulbs in my head.HELP

Save info off old Hard Drive not in use

Let me see if I get you right. You want to wipe your old hard drive, the Quantum 6.4, and stick it into your new Dell perhaps? That sounds like the best solution to me. Sure, you have to crack open your new Dell, but the advantage is that you canm install the Second/OLD Hard drive as a secondary slave or secondary master right behind your CD-RW in the new machine. I think you will find it much easier as well wiping the old hard drive once it is inside your new Dell, and booting up into Windows, Formatting it, and Using it to store all Those CD-RW related huge files. If you are not familiar with installing hard drives all together, you can just keep this question open until someone steps you through it.

My question was quite different from answer given. I am not looking to rip apart a $3000 DELL to put in a 5 year old Quantum HD

Your problem is how to get the data off the old computer and store it on cdr that is connected to the new computer. The answer to the problem can be done in several ways.

One put the old drive in the new computer and then save all the data to thecdr.

The second would be to use some backup program to copy the files to floppy disk to transfer it then to the new computer and then save it to the cdr. such as using msbackup.

The third way would be to install network cards in each computer and then transfer the files across the network and then save then to the cdr.

The forth way would be to install a nul modem connection using LAPLINK and so you can copy the files off the old computer to the new computer and then save the files tothe cdr.

I think you owe Chavez an apology (as well we the points) as he has correctly identified the most efficient solution to your problem. If all you need is to copy everything from one hard drive to another, it is simplest to plug both hard drives intothe same machine and use Windows Explorer or Xcopy to transfer the files. It is not difficult to open a Dell case, as a matter of fact their cases are just about the most intelligently designed cases out there, and are very easy to open (If you need assistance with this step, check their web site for diagrams and step-by-step procedures).

If you decide to transfer the files by temporarily installing the drive, you will need to check the master/slave jumper on the Quantum. If there is already a drive (HD, CD, Zip, etc) on the cable into which you plug the Quantum, you must put its jumper in the 'slave' position. Otherwise you can leave it in 'master' position. When you boot up, windows should detect the new drive automatically.

Then, once the drive is installed, you can burn your CD's, and remove the Quantum.

Any other solution will require that you get the Aptiva running AND contend with a VERY LENGTHY transfer process, as well as possibly having to open the cases anyway. Transferring the drive contents with floppies would take hours, as would a laplink type of connection. A network connection would require both pc's be working and have network cards installed. You could just install a CDRW in the Aptiva, but again that means getting the Aptiva running and it's doubtful that a modern CDRW would work with a 5 year old machine.

As you can see, temporarily installing the Quantum into your Dell is really the only way to go.
