Saving Critical updates

By TPCosmo ·
I need to install the critical updates to about 25 workstations, and have only one 56k line to work with. I am wondering if I can download all of the critical updates to a file, burn it to CD, then install them from there. It will take forever on 56k, cause they are Win98 clients, with no updates ever installed. I think the security patches add up to over 10mb.
Any help would be great.
Thanks a lot.
Tom

First I would determine what updates would be critical and then download in a zip file using a zip utility, then create a folder titled critical updates and unzip the files on the hard drive and use your idea of then storing them on a CD to distribute over the network or loading each machine from the cd-rom.

I do agree that you such determine which files are the most critical do download first however I differ in doing the CD-Rom or zip file solution.
My solution would be make a share on the d/l file folder on your pc and then go to each station and connect the workstation to your pc and install from there.
Please Note: I am not saying that the other solution is not going to work( which it is) but it will take more time to do 25 stations one at a time when you can do multipule stations at oncesince your are connecting to your pc's folders and copying it from there..

If your machines aren't connected to the Internet you don't need security patches. Get the other stuff you need, burn it, and "touch" each machine.

The MS Corporate site is a good place to go, but some updates aren't available from there.

Have a look at Pete Forrest's pages at http://www.pcforrest.freeserve.co.uk/win98_updates.htm
He goes into good detail about how to get round this problem, and I have used the technique myself, to good effect.

Good luck
Roger
