Possible corrupt sectors/cluster that scandisk can't fix - If you want to disable scan disk :
Go to DOS at the C: Prompt type edit msdos.sys
go to the bottom of the script & change
autoscan=1 to autoscan=0 Then Save (Alt F S)
& exit on reboot windows will not run scandisk.

I suggest that you might possibly have bad sectors/clusters also. I would try running scandisk with the through option which will scan the surface of the disk for bad clusters and attempt to repair them. If it repairs them then it will mark any bad sectors so that the operating system will not use it again. Also not shutting down properly will cause scandisk to run on startup.

If you are using Windows98 Second edition, there are a couple of updates needed that allow the computer to shut down properly.

Have a check on the microsoft sight to see if you need any updates relating to hard disks and shut downs.

If there are, I recomend downloading these, then reactivating your auto scan disk (if you disabled it)
