Scandisk and Defrag Hang - Win98SE

By debbie ·
I have two computers at home networked using Sygate....but even before Sygate, neither computer can successfully run Scandisk or Defrag....they just hang... eventually the next morning I have to reset. I've run scandisk at a dos level and that's fine. no problems found. Any suggestions.
Thanks.

Scandisk and Defrag Hang - Win98SE

by Working IT In reply to Scandisk and Defrag Hang ...

Try to run the ScanDisk and Defrag from the Safe Mode without any screen saver. If the PC is still hanging, that's very bad. You may need to reformat the whole PC. If the ScanDisk and Defrag are running fine in the Safe Mode, it means there are someconflict with one or more programs on your PC. Most of the time is the Anti-Virus and Screen Saver programs. Try to uninstall any unused program and disable the screen saver, and run the ScanDisk and Defrag again.

Hope it help!

Best to run scandisk from DOS.
Or: Remove all tray memory resident. Do Ctrl+Alt+Delete to see any remaining and endtask. Any image programs or those that keep looking at the system are the worse.
Defrag doesn't seem to work from DOS. I use PowerDefrag (Shareware: e-technik.com) which bypasses the memory resident problems.

My Sunday routine:
Do cleanup. Backup important files.
Reboot to DOS then run a batch file:
scan.bat
scandisk /all /autofix /nosave /nosummary
Then:
exit to return to Windows and run Power Defrag which does all partitions and hard drives. I have 4 partitions and 2 hard drives.
Then I read the Sunday paper.
Running scandisk at DOS bypasses all those things that hang it up when run from Windows.

Try running them in Safe Mode, and if it still hangs, reformat the hard drive and reinstall windows.

Hope this works, Maozy

Scandisk and Defrag Hang - Win98SE

This used to happen to me all of the time. I have two hard drives and 5 partitions. I would try to run scandisk and get up the next morning to find a window telling me that scandisk had to restart ten times because something was writing to the disk. Then it would suggest that I shut down all programs - it was quite the puzzle. The answer is that there are many programs running in windows that are not apparent. Here is what I do now and it works all of the time.

Press the Ctrl, the Alt and the Delete keys all at the same time. That will show you all of the programs that are running. Highlight the first one and press 'end task'. Then do the Ctrl / Alt / Delete again and highlight the next one and press 'end task'. Continue doing that until you have ended all of the tasks except Explorer. If you end Explorer, Windows will shut down. When you have ended all of the tasks run scan disk and it will work.

Yes, it is a pain; however, it is the only way I can get it to work with the tools Windows supplies. I don't think running scan disk from DOS is a viable option in Win 98 SE.

Good Luck,
Erwin
