scandisk won't complete

By abednego ·
I can't start windows98 on my pc. It runs Scandisk & gets stuck at 49%. It started running Scandisk every time I booted even after having shut down gracefully about 2 months ago.

I can boot off a floppy, but when I go to C: and try to start Windows I get stuck in Scandisk again. Ideas?

Try something stronger than scandisk

by pierre In reply to scandisk won't complete

I would suggest you use something a bit more robust than Scandisk in this case. Personally, I like Spinrite, which is much more industrial-strength, though it may take several hours to properly scan a disk. See http://www.grc.com/spinrite.htm to get that particular utility.

Scandisk will not complete

by william.robinson In reply to scandisk won't complete

More than likely you have corruption within the Windows swapfile and scandisk refuses to deal with it. You should be able to stop scandisk (hit esc) and continue on to the desktop. The easiest way to fix the swapfile is to go into your file system properties and establish a permanent swapfile (set min and max size to the same value) of roughly 128-256 MB. After the reboot, scandisk will hopefully finish!

Addendum to this advice

Good suggestion on the swap file. A rule of thumb is to size it 2 - 2 1/2 times the size of the available RAM on the given computer. Since I have a relatively large hard disk (30 G) with 2MB partitions, I isolated my swap file on its own partition (along with some other cache files), and sized to to 3 times my RAM (128 x 3 = 384).

Regarding the failure of Scan Disk, a similar thing happened to me. Since I had Norton SystemWorks installed, I went to DiskDoctor and ran it. No problem; it sailed through it and corrected the errors. Now, DiskDoctor does all that work for me, and I have been happy since.
