Scandisk won't complete

scandisk won't complete
I can't start windows98 on my pc. It runs Scandisk & gets stuck at 49%. It
started running Scandisk every time I booted even after having shut down
gracefully about 2 months ago.

I can boot off a floppy, but when I go to C: and try to start Windows I get
stuck in Scandisk again. Ideas?

Usually this means that your drive is not in good shape. You could try to run Norton utilities on it to be sure.

Press F8 during bootup to get the menu, then boot into Safe Mode. If Scandisk starts, it should finish in Safe Mode. When it's done, reboot again. If Scandisk starts again, even though you shut down gracefully, see this thread:

Make sure you have your antivirus turned off. Also any disk monitoring software that may run in the background. Worked for me. If it runs in safemode sure bet that your software is causing problem not harddrive.

Try booting into dos mode.

Press F8 while booting up and choose
Command Prompt

type scandisk
let this one complete
if it prompts to fix long file name tell it not to fix.

or try safe mode

run scandisk for windows in safe mode to see if it locks up again.

If it does lock in safe mode

boot up to dos mode again and at the commpand prompt type

scandisk /surface

this will test the surface of the disk and check for physical errors.

Hey it depends on the computer, if it is a propritary system like IBM, HP or gateway you need to wait for the spash screen to start. the splash screen is when thier name comes up, then hold down the ctrl key to get to safe mode. If you can make it to safe mode you need to go to the start menu and type in msconfig and hit the enter key. i can not tell you any more here there is not any more room
