Does Norton define the specific virus?

If so, go to their database, and check for removal instructions.

Some viri entwine themselves so heavily into some files that the only option is to delete / replace the file.

You definately have something infected, if opening "certain files" kicks off a virus alert.
Now, if Norton is blocking the virus, then the files you are opening are probably not getting infected, but whatever you are using to OPEN the files IS infected.

I would just run a full scan against all file types immediately, and see what Norton finds. And if it can't clean or quarantine the root infected file, it will at least list what file that is. You can then take care of the file itself.

Irun Norton at work now, and am very happy with it overall. It just sometimes leaves files in a "Left Alone" status, and those are the one you need to manually check out and fix.

hope this helps

This is normal. XP and 2000 use lots of scripts for normal commands. Go into Norton and disable the script detector.

I did this and it worked perfectly ever since.

copy the root of the file...ie c:\program files\yada\yada\yada. Then go to the root and scan the file you are trying to open. If the scan comes back negitive then you are dealing with an infected program. I would say be careful about disabiling script blocking on your system however. I think that is a sure fire way to get yourself hit by a bigger problem. If you scan the root and do find a virus then delete it and reinstall the application. This will allow you to be sure you have removed the virual code from your system. It is better safe than hosed =).
