Seagate Travan 20 IDE tape unit backups

By harold.smit ·
Hi
I'm testing at work a Seagate Travan 20 IDE tape unit, and I must say It's cheap and works fine, but the only problem I have is that I cant get more than 14,93 Gb DATA on it.
The specs say it can handle 20 GB compressed, but no matter how I compress it (and I used several backup software as Veritas and ArcServe)As soon as it reaches 14,93 Gb data, it askes me for another tape.
Does anyone have expierence with this unit, and can help me.

The Tape Really Only Holds 10Gigs.
You are getting 1.493 to 1 compression.
If you got 2 to 1 compression you would get 20 Gigs on the tape.

These tapes are quite deceptive as I have never seen 2 to 1 or better compression achieved across an entire backup. So you are getting about all that you will on that tape. It could vary based on the actual files you are backing up. Some files can be packed tighter than others thus getting more GB on the tape.

Keep in mind there is NO WAY to get 14GB of Data on a 10GB cartrdge - so this is definitely the amount of data before compression.
