Secondary HD for storage-what do I need to do?

By Renk ·
okay- I know I'm supposed to be a pro, but I don't have a clue what I'm doing with this. My ex bought my daughter a notebook for Christmas; removed and installed her old hd into my PC so that 1) I could get her stuff off, and 2)store music and photos on there.

So far, so good. I can see it as drive E, can move files and folder around wherever, but he said I'd want to remove the OS from the slaved HD and I want to uninstall most, if not all, of the programs there.

I know I've done this before, my ex knows I've done this before but it's been a few years and I had a cheat sheet and quite honestly, I'm clueless. If I tell him that I don't know what I'm doing, he'll eventually come round and do it for me, but I'd like to do it myself. With, of course, a little help from my friends....

Help, please....

Slave Drive?

by TheChas In reply to Secondary HD for storage- ...

Well, if this is a drive from another computer, and you installed it as a secondary or slave drive in your computer, there should be nothing to uninstall. Since you are booting off of your primary hard drive, your system does not know any of the programs on the slave drive exist.

All you need to do, is delete the Program files and Windows folders to clean the OS and installed programs from the slave drive.

You should also be able to delete the pagefile.sys file and pretty much everything else except for the data files you want to save.

Usually, what I do is copy off the files I want to save and then format the drive. Just make sure that you have ALL of the files saved before formatting.
