Secondary IDE connector fails

By BluesCat ·
ASRock P4V88, Win XP Pro SP2
IDE secondary connector does not recognize my DVD drive anymore.... or any other drive.
Already done:
-Changed IDE cable
-Checked the BIOS
-DVD drive jumper ok on Master (only drive connected.
-Uninstalled/reinstalled IDE driver in XP Hardware manager
-Tried IDE 2 with other drives, DVD and Hard drives.
Fyi IDE 1 still ok. Connected one hard drive and DVD drive to it as an emergency solution.

Thanks

Sounds like your secondary IDE controller has gone kaput.
Will it autodetect a hd from the bios? If not then its probably bad (considering the steps you've allready taken) Check to make sure that none of the pins on the connector have been bent or broken off in the old cable. Other than that I can't really think of anything else to tell you to try. If it doesn't detect the drive in the bios then its a hardware failure.
Either replace the board or get a ide controller card.

I'm sure you've already checked, but sometimes we forget the obvious. Verify that secondary IDE channel is enabled in BIOS.

If that's not the problem, then secondary IDE channel has probably bitten the dust. Can either replace mobo or install a PCI IDE controller card such as a Promise Ultra 100 TX2.

I have seen this a few times with a new case or motherboard.
This happens when front USB cables are connected to the motherboard backward. To test this, disconnect the USB cables and see if the devices from Secondary IDE are recognized. The USB cable itself may be bad also.
