Server dropping off of network

By Ricky Wilson ·
I run a somewhat small network with 5 servers and 45 workstations. The problem I've been having recently is one server (fileserver)which is also a BDC, is dropping off the network for apparently no reason. There is nothing in the event viewer or anywhere else that I can tell. I receive no errors other than "the specified device/path/drive cannot be found" when attempting to access a drive from within the network. I reboot and it usually comes back up and is fine for anywhere from a few minutes to a few days. Weird, I'm baffled. Any suggestions?

I am assuming you are running a mix of win/95 and WinNt 4.0 workstations. I suspect that you are having a contention for the master browsing control from one of your low end workstations. Look at who is browsing on the network, and turn of the ability to contend as a master browser on all of your low end pcs and your windows 95 clients. It sounds like you are experiencing "browser wars", and some user somewhere in your organization starts the problem when he/she hangs, and then reboots his/her machine.
cheers

Checked the above and didn't have any "browser wars" going on but thanks for responding.

Besides what Answer 1 is suggesting, I also would recommend that you check cabling from that server to the hub/switch and also try replacing a similar new NIC. A bad NIC can cause packets flooding and at the same time cuts off your server.

Hope this will work!!!
