Server Freezing on re-boot

By phawkinson ·
On some of the servers in my remote offices I have a problem with them freezing on the screen that says "Please wait while system writes unsaved data to disk." It just stays there until I manually re-boot (Fondly known here as "Giving it the Finger")

Does anyone know why this is happening and what I can do to prevent it from happening?

Thanks

Are you sure it is hung? If Exchange server is on the server is can take upto 45 minutes before re-booting. Other application can also cause the delay.

If the Server has Mac files , it is bettter to stop them before shutdown.,If it exchange , stopping exchange services , will speed up the shutdown process.

Could be a number of reason, but I agree about the Exchange issue...I've seen Exchange services take about 2 hours to stop (when the lovebug virus hit we stopped the service to prevent the spread). You may want to try stopping services during off-times to see which one is the service that takes the longest to stop. Once you have nailed that down it will be easier to troubleshoot the problem.

ref the q Q172452. If it is not exchange application, refer to any process which opens larger files . This has to be stopped before actual shutdown takes place.
Thanks
