Server testing and imaging

By The Weekly Geek ·
Once to twice a year I have wanted to have a mirror of a server so I can run tests and not mess up the origional server.
My ideal situation would be an image of the origional server. The next best would be a way to install / copy the domain functions of that server to another such as Active Director, users, computers ...
I do NOT have similiar hardware so my test server is whatever "spare" PC I have avaliable so that too is an issue.
SonicWall sells 2 products (you have to buy both) that will make an image and allow recovery to dissimiliar hardware.
Do any of you have a way you do this?
The test will vary from "why is the server slow" to "it's time to upgrade from SBS 2003 to SBS 2008" to "does this security product really work".
Thanks a Million in advance.

while trial and error is time consuming and requires lots of research to solve the errors that might pop up, the biggest benefit is learning.

try something, try fixing what errors pop up. If you run into a problem, then ask for some suggestions.
