Servers missing

By cclark ·
The servers across the WAN link (2 T-1's) have disappeared from server manager/network neighborhood. I can ping, map drive, but not browse, all services are running.

Can't offer much, but I know when I experienced similar problems it turned out to be a problem with our MASTER BROWSER in a remote subnet.

Good luck,
Kurt G.

Did you try an Lmhosts file on one of the computers and see if you could force a connection to the server. Was a browser election forced between the servers, sometimes you loose a browser that way. I would try the lmhosts thing other than that....

Are the 'missing' servers on a different subnet? Are they in a separate domain? Is there a Domain Controller (PDC or BDC) in the remote network? The problem is definitely a Master Browser issue, but how to resolve will depend on the network configuration...

Yap, the problem is Master Browser. I guess you don't have the domain controller on the remote site. Here's something I worked.
- select on NT wkst to act as Master Browser in remote site. This wkst should run all the time. Define DC and IP addressof PDC in LMHOSTS.
- Edit registry on wkst to force it be master browser.
\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Browser\Parameters\IsDomainMasterBrowser to be YES.

- Define selected wkst+ip in LMHOSTS on the PDC.

You will need to install a WINS server to be able to browse the remote machines.
