    Service for Shared Folders

    Locked

    by acarigua ·

I have a windows 2000 machine to be set up as a file server. Under Computer Management when I select the Shared Folders, I get an error saying the Server service is not started. I cannot find any reference to this under Services. Can anyone help as I need to share a couple of the drives. The machine is connecting to a NT server network.

There is a Service called SERVER.
Normally, it is running by default.
So, look for SERVER and start that Service.
Then you can share out a folder.

There is no service listed under Services called SERVER. Thats the main problem, I am not sure what service I am supposed to start as the SERVER service it mentions in the error does not appear under Services.

If you are not connected to a network, you must do this first, if you wan to make sure the box is running right, you can use the “MS loopback adapter” under the new hardware addition window. Just a hunch but it is worth a try.

Check out if u r on the same network segment
& able to ping to other pc’s.
Try pinging to localhost this will give you
the correct picture of your NIC.

I am definitely on the same network segment. I can see other machines on the same network.

Log on to the server itself as an administrator
      Open a command window
      type net start server

Sorry but this didnt help either. Ended up getting a network contractor in who apparently re-installed and did not have any issues in the end. Thanks to all who answered..
