Set up computer as proxy server to be accessed with another computer

By lamentofking ·
Does anyone know how I can set up my computer as a proxy server? I want it with a user name and password too. I have a desktop computer that I want to set up as a proxy server and a laptop that will connect to it. Both are using windows xp.

I use a product called AllegroSurf from Rhinosoft software, and have deployed this with good results for several small businesses, educational settings, and home users with kids.

www.allegrosurf.com

The most foolproof way to setup AllegroSurf is to use it to split the network between the 'kids' and the 'grown-up' network by having two network interfaces in the PC. One interface is connected to the router/firewall, and the other interface is connected to a wired switch and/or wireless access point to create the 'kids' network.

The product runs fine on a 1GHZ XP box with 512MB ram.

Then you assign the 'kids' PCs static IP addresses and configure the the web browser of these PCs to use the proxy.

AllegroSurf can be setup with a strict whitelist, which is great for younger kids, or it can use a smart-filtering blacklist. You can also block/allow things like p2p, IM, and even javascript. It logs everything and does cacheing/compression for added throughput.

A competitive product is WebSense Express, and Squid with DansGuardian is a similar concept.
