Setting up a mail server

By richardson ·
I need a roadmap for setting up a mail server using RedHat 6.2. What config files do I change? I have a peer network currently. Do I need to setup DNS? I would like my users to use MS-Outlook for a client to send and receive mail. I would also like to fetch mail from a dialup ISP and add it to each users mailbox as needed. The HOWTO's are great but I need basic knowledge on how to start!

You will need to install and set up Fetchmail to get your mail from your ISP, unless you can talk them into giving you an MX record in DNS. (however I am assuming you are on a dialup and cannot do that) You should not need a DNS.

You will needto turn on POP3 in the file /etc/inetd.conf (take out the # in front of pop3)
In etc/services you will need to turn on smtp (port 25) and pop-3 (port 110)

You may need to configure sendmail, which I cannot help you with. I personally use qmail, but it was a pain in the arse to get set up right as well. but then again I was doing virtual users so your milage may vary.

Hope this gets you started.
