Setting up dedicated firewall

By j72571 ·
I have been asked to install a low-cost network at a small business. They are very concerned about security on their broadband connection, and a dedicated firewall would be the answer.

My question is: I've heard of software that can run on an old Intel system (486/Pentium) that runs without even an O/S or HD installed. Is such a product available? Otherwise, would I be best off isntalling a small hard drive and a minimal version of Linux?

Thanks.

In the situation you are describing, I would use a firewall appliance (SonicWall, Watchguard) vs. a software-based firewall. No moving parts and no patches to install. A software-based firewall requires "care and feeding" that the small business probably lacks staff for. A SonicWall SOHO/10 is about $350.00.

Good luck.

I've use Sonicwall in the past, but since this project entails continuing support, I wanted to experiment with a software-based product.

gnatbox is the product you are thinking of for an old spare pc it is execlent, also use a software backup for each pc like Black ice pro form http://www.networkice.com/ it can be configured to run on each pc invisibel and controled from a central location, i use thier blackice defender for my home unit with a linksys router.

Thanks for your help--this was one of the products I'd heard of and been interested in using. The other was Gateway Guardian from http://merilus.com, but the gnatbox product looks to be the best option.
