setting up w2k ws on different sub net

By chandras ·
we have been allocated a new subnet(B) to as the other subnet(A) has filled up. The NT server (NT 4) - primary and backup is on subnet A and I have setup wins on both servers. The dns has all been setup and is working fine. But when I setup the w/s with subnet b address to join the domain I get the msg. "The specified domain either does not exist or could not be contacted".
Now I can ping any machines from this workstation which implies the dns and dhcp (are setup on unix) settings are correct.

Since you don't have a server on the B subnet, you have to tell the workstation how to find the PDC or a BDC. You can either do that by supplying a WINS address, using an LMHOSTS file or by configuring the router to forward NetBIOS traffic to the other subnet. Of these, the easiest is probably just to have DCHP supply a WINS address to the workstations.

Hi Paul

Thanks for responding to this.
I have set up the wins in the w/s to look up the lmhosts file which contains
ip, name of server, #PRE #DOM:(domain).
