Here is a link to a Microsoft page that describes how to get past the su995035 error.

http://tinyurl.com/3y4i

As to step by step, are you using the W98 upgrade or Full CD?
Are you doing an upgrade install?
Or a full clean install?

I couldset up a W95 system and see what I get, and create a full guide if needed.

Once you get past the error, it really isn't much different than installing any other software.

There are a few option screens.

1 asks if you wish to save the old files. I would only save the old files under 2 situations:
1. you think you might want to remove W98 and go back to W95
2. You have PLENTY of free hard drive space.

There is also the option to choose a custom install.
I alwys choose custom so that I can choose which optional components Windows Installs.
If you are not sure, you can choose either typical, or minimal depending on how much free hard drive space there is.

When Windows starts asking for driver files, I always point the wizzard to use the manufactures latest drivers that I have downloaded and extracted ahead of time.

After all the drivers are updated, I run scandisk and defrag.

Then, I install the security, critical, and other updates that I desire using Windows Update.

Run scandisk and defrag again.

Sorry it took so long.
I had problems finding a box that ran slow enough to install W95 onto.

Here's how the upgrade went for me.

W98SE upgrade from W95

1. Check the HCL and verify that you meet the minimum hardware requirements, and that all hardware is supported (video cards, modems and older printers can be issues).

1a. I recommend at least 300MHz and 128MB of RAM for W98.
Also, a MINIMUM of 500MB free HDD space for the upgrade, and 600MB free if you wish to save the W95 files.

2. Download the latest W98 versions of all device drivers.
Copy to an easy to find folder such as c:\Drivers\(device name)
1 folder for each device.
If files are zipped, or in a self extracting archive, extract the files to the appropriate folder.

Tools to help identify hardware:
www.belarc.com
www.sisoftware.com

3. CLEANUP:
Un-install all those programs that you have been meaning to remove.
Delete un-needed files.
Clean out the C:\Windows\Temp folder
and the Temporary Internet Cache files for your browser.

Empty the recycle bin

Boot into safe mode, and run scandisk and defrag.

4. Boot into 'normal' mode, and insert the W98 upgrade CD.

It should autorun and inform you that the CD has a newer version of Windows, and ask if you wish to install the newer version.

The first step is to examine your system for hardware compatability, and any outdated files.

Answer Yes to any files setup asks to replace.

License Agreement:

Product Key:

Save Files: Answer yes if; you might want to go back to W95 AND you have enough free hard drive space.

Location: Country for settings.

Startup disk: Unless you already have 1, create a W98 startup disk when prompted to.

Copy files:
Re-Start: At any re-start, you can either wait, or click the button.

NOTE: It is not unusual for setup to lockup at any point.
If you are sure that setup has locked up, hit the reset button on the PC. Setup should resume on it'sown.
If it does not re-start, or Windows continues to hang at the same point, boot from the startup disk, and run setup.

Setup Hardware:
Re-Start

Finalize settings:
Re-Start

May need to install some hardware on this last re-boot.

Welcome screen should appear. Disable as desired.

Now, in my opinion, the fun has just begun.

Run scandisk and defrag.

Install the updated drivers in the following order. Re-Start as needed.

IDE and INF drivers for motherboard
DirectX (as supported by the video card driver)
Video card driver
Modem driver
Sound Card driver
Other device drivers

If the PC will be used on-line, connect and install ALL critical and security updates from
www.microsoft.com/windows
Click on the Windows Update button.

You also want to install at least IE 5.5 SP2 or IE6 SP1 unless you use Netscape, in which case, I
recommend installing Mozilla www.mozilla.org

If this helps you get things running, I would appreciate some extra points.
It took over an hour to get everything running to create this procedure.
