Sharing IE6 Favourite folder for Win9x/Win2K

By aikwang ·
I'm dual booting Win98 and Win2K, is there anyway to make Win9x/Win2K to share the same favourite folder of Internet Explorer?

I just want to make sure the contents in the favourite folders of both IE are the same.

The only way I know of would be to do a File/Import and Export from IE. Follow the wizard and export your favorites into a file on the hard drive. Then from the other operating system boot up and open IE and do a File/Import and Export. Follow the wizard and import your favorites from the file back into IE.

Soory that your idea does not help because i want to have both IE favourite folder to synchronis automatically, rather than to do it manually.

The import/export should work fine, but I usually just copy/paste the Favorites folder into the users folder and overwrite all duplicates.

I'm interested in changing of registry/configuration setting so that the favourite folder of both IE is pointing to the same database path.

I had the outlook express of both OS pointing to the same database, thus it doesn't matter which OS i've boot into.
When i launch the outlook express, it'll have the same message folders/address/names etc.

Ok, now I get what you want. I am not sure in win98 but it might be in the same place. Anyway, in the registry for win2k you can alter the favorites path by going to
HKCU\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\shellfolders\ and change the path in the Favorites key

I tried with Win98 but the registry entry revert back to the original c:\windows\favourites by itself, after i reboot the machine.

Seems like the registry did not save my changes.

Yes there is a way.
The solution is to point the Favorites location in Windows 2000 to that in Windows 98.

Let?s say the favorite folder in Windows 98 is C:\Windows\Favorites (If not, correct this accordingly).

1. Boot to windows 2000 with the account (say, Joe) that you want to synchronize the Favorites in Windows 98.

2. Synchronize the Favorites contents by drag and drop from C:\Windows\Favorites and \Winnt\Documents and Settings\Joe\Favorites to each other (or you could export and import favorites from Windows 98 to Windows 2000). So now, you have exactly the same Favorites contents in both Win98 and Win2000.

3. Run registry editing (REGEDIT).

4. Search for %userprofile%\Favorites (Data) and change it to C:\Windows\Favorites.

If you need further help, please post a comment.

Note: Editing the registry is risky. Before making any changes, back up the registry so you can restore it if something goes wrong.

To take the Registry editing effective, either you have to logoff or restart.

In Step 4, "change it" should have been "change them".

I'd tried changing the registry settings pointing to win98 favourite folder at c:\windows\favourites, but the settings chage back to the original path.

Exactly the same problem i encounter when i try the suggestion made by w2ktechman.
