By Marcie Stauch ·
Does anyone have guidelines as to the maximum default size attachments should be (in general)?

It should not be much of a problem.
But think u should look at some aspects like,
the hardware of your server ( whether its having enough large resources) , secondly the location of mails for users (mailbox or pst file on local pc) because having big attachments in msgs could **** up the mailbox size , also the kind of network speed so that the mailbox of users would do increase faster .

We have about 200 + users here who use their mailboxes as filing cabinets and hate to throw away anything. The mailboxes are stored on the Exchange server and even though we are working very hard to train the users to archive their mail, the mailboxes are still getting very large between autoarchives. Many of the users send and receive very large Excel and/or graphic files.
