SLOW after gateway installation!

By rforbes ·
I have 2 IBM Netvista Desktops ( 6823 ) hooked to a GNet Gateway. Both are now extremely slow when logging in, surfing the net and logging out. My ISP states that my MTU is 1435 yet the router is set at 1200. Can anyone help?

You really need a network sniffer to determine whats happening to your packets.
It could be a couple things.

1. Lots of retransmits is one way this could be happening since all Ethernet is contention based media.

2. 100 MB on a cat 3 cable. It will run, but you will get this exact type of problem.

3. Bad DNS entry. Verify your DNS entries are valid and active IPs.

MTU could be an issue, but the only real way to test it is to bump up the MTU on the router to 1435.

You might also check your RECVWindow sizes.

You can get a great little tool from www.dlsreports.com called DR.TCP. that will allow you to adjust these settings and more.

Post your results and we can continue troubleshooting...
