Slow network link to office block

By rhys.gottwald ·
I am running a network in a large factory. We have 5 office blocks spread though out the factory. About three weeks ago, one of the blocks just became slow. Files are getting corrupted, daily, and people are starting to scream for my blood. I have changed the fibber tail from the splice box to the hub, tested the main fibber, and changed the hub out but still, it is corrupting data and running backwards. Please, please help.

You may have a bad network card in one of your machines. You can shut down each workstation one by one and see if the slowdowns stop. Only shut down one at a time. Also, make sure each network cable is working properly and not pinched, or anything like that.

Try unpluggin all the computers in that block and plugging in a laptop only. See if its faster then, if it is then probably one of you NIC's is bad. Also make sure that each end of the fiber is still smooth and not cracked and that the cable isnt pinched anywhere.

Good answers above but you also might want to hook a computer up to the hub in question and run Network Monitor on it to look for any problem areas. It does sound like you have a network card in one of the workstaions going bad.

Another option is to run MRTG (or any other Network Analyzer tool) to look at the traffic to see which system(s) are chatty, etc.

Recheck the fiber with a HIGH quality TDR tester from each end. Do this when the factory ambient temperature is coldest, hottest, and midrange. Building structures expand & contract with temp change. The fiber may get stressed enough to fail only at specific temperatures. Don't forget to try changing the HUB and Fiber Transciever at the other end as well.
