Slow Population of Network Neighboorhood

By colin1 ·
I have a PC connected to a different subnet (192.1.2.1) thru a ACT router to my other site (192.1.1.1) and am using WINS server to provide name resolution.

It takes a long time for the PC on the subnet 192.1.2 to see all the nodes on subnet 192.1.1.

Is the a way to make this quicker or is there a configuration change I can make to speed up the process.

Thanks

It sounds as though one of your subnets is broadcasting, you might want to check and see how you have your NetBios Name Nodes configured. To check this run nbtstat -r and see how many names are being retrieved via broadcast and via wins. If the broadcast is higher you may have an incorrect node setting or you may simply need another wins server, if you have a large network. The node setting should be H, meaning all computers query the WINS server first. Any other one and they may be broadcasting, using cache, H is the default though, so unless you changed it i doubt that is the problem. This should be a good starting point though. Hope this helps

Ensure that you have WINS servers on both subnets and configure the WINS servers to exchange info with each other. If you only have 1 WINS, the workstations on the remote network will have trouble talking with the local WINS and name resolution willbe slow directly in proportion to how slow the WAN link is.
