slowdown in OS

By dstout ·
Here's the situation: Windows ME, Compaq machine, AMD Duron 750. Runs approximately 30-45 minutes and then slows down immensely. Have defragged and scan disk and no problems or errors found. Rebooting clears up speed problem for another 30-45 minutes and then slows down again. Any advice?

The processor is most likely burning out. Check to make sure the fan is still running on the machine. You may need to look at getting a new chip.

I would check for spy/ad ware running in the background. It is getting very invasive. After the first of Feb (new version coming out) go to www.lavasoftusa.com and download the AdAware program and run it according to instructions. Very good utility - will remove reg hooks and hidden reg hooks for spyware. We usually remove them with no problems.

This was part of the problem. I ran the AdAware (new version) to remove spyware and they also had programs too many programs running in the background. The last piece of the problem seemed to be a memory leak. It works fine now. Thank You.

Run MSCONFIG utility from RUN command. Uncheck any unknown, unnecessary files that are loading at startup.

Look at the Task Monitor -> Processes, see if you can identify any process that is hugging the CPU time. See if you can identify what program is launcing the process.

Have you got plenty of free disk space? If you do not have enough space free the page file, if set to dynamic, will eat up the available space and slow the computer to a crawl.

Good luck
