Software to archive files

By rlesley ·
I am looking for a program that will monitor user files on my server and move them to my archive server when they haven't been accessed in six months. Once they get on my archive server I burn a CD-ROM. Any ideas or solutions.

You do not need an special software to do this. I do it every year on my server.

Use the Search program with the advance search options to look for files by a date range. Once the list is complete you can Cut and Paste those files to you archiveServer.

The best solution I've seen so far is CA's ARCserve. It has an HSM (Hierarchical Storage Management) option which does just what you want - it moves old and long unaccessed files to a slower media (be that tape or WORM device like MO or CD-R, or even Zip drive). More than that, it can maintain links to those files in place and if happens that user would want to access the file that's actually backed up, HSM will restore it back and allow access to it automatically provided it can access the backup media that holds the file.
VERITAS BackupExec 7.x also has some feature like this, but I can't say much about it.
