"Start" menu choices greyed out.

By eschwartz ·
Win98SE - When I right mouse click on START, [open] and [explore] choices are greyed out other choices are available.

Wasn't always this way. What happened??

Thanks

You will have to be more specific about which options are greyd out, It could be that you installed a program that automatically writes it self into that option but you have removed the program and it did not completely remove that option but pleasebe more specific

Have you setup any policies in you PC ??? Most of the time when you have greyed choices in your PC is because you have setup restrictions on your policy file. Do a search on your hardrive for any *.pol file.

This is no big deal, no file or lnk is lost or missing. I've seen 200 desktops/laptops with win95b,c & Win98 all with the greyed "open or explore" option. MS after aug95 windows version, made this the default during current type of installs ( & orig InetExplr4.0).
If you can "open or explore" the Start Button, all explorer shows you is the C:\Win9x\Start Menu\ sub-dir file links. You probably know - to the same place by right clicking an empty space on Taskbar, choose properties/ startMenutab/ then advanced. If you must- from any explorer window, drop-down View & choose folder options. The top right tab = File types should be visited monthly and checked for "dead" icons (mislinked or deleted apps). You can change the defaults for Folder or for yourself find the StartButtonIcon. If it's not there the data/value in the registry is 20 00 00 00 (def.) not 40 +. Which is a waste of time drilling to the hk_lm/s/m/win/cv/explorer/setup/x/y/z/preferences KEY. Send me a note if it's a must have.
