startup programs not starting

By PAS2 ·
On an older Win95 system, there are two entries in the Startup folder and neither of them runs at windows startup. If I go in with explorer, I can start them manually. Is there any solution to this other than a Windows clean install. Both of the entries start programs on a mapped drive to the server.

Hi,
Try the following if you have not done so..
start-run-msconfig

check to make sure that all startup item are ticked.

Also check if you can run the items from the run command using the mapped drives.

Make sure you're connected to the network before trying to run the programs.

I am assuming that the normal W9X startup sequence connects to the network and establishes drive mapping prior to running "startup" programs. If this is true, then the connection is done automatically. If not connected, there is a dialog box thatsays connection was not made.

An application or a person might have changed the startup folder. This has been known to happen with MS Office. If you have TweakUI you can view the current starup folder under the My Computer tab.

If you've installed MS Office look to see if there is a folder something like:

C:\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Microsoft
Reference\Startup

If there is then Office has reset the startup folder. You can either use that folder as your startup and place the shortcuts to the programs you want to startup in that folder.

You could also use regedit and look for the key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders

and this will tell you what the current startup folder has been set to. If it is different than c:\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup then someone or something has changed it to the value that you find. Use that value or change it back to the original (but then anything in the current value for the startup folder will not start at Windows startup.

Enjoy,

Take a look at the properties of the icons you have in the Start folder - are you 100% positive that they are pathed correctly?
