Starup slows after desktop appears

By richardt ·
Hello, A few weeks ago my computer started to slow after the desktop appeared.(It's quick up to that point.) I have tried the usual fixes and I have tried stopping almost everything on Startup (Anti-Virus, Firewall,Anti-Spam software, etc.)but it doesn't make any difference, which makes me think that I have an unusual problem. I have tried setting a boot defrag with Diskeeper but I get a message sayibg that the defrag couldn't be performed because Diskeeper didn't have sole command or words to that effect. As I had stopped almost everything else, I don't know what it could be referring to. I was thinking that it might be a Disk problem but Chkdsk doesn't find any problems. Any ideas, anyone. Thanks, BertNoir

Do you have active desktop enabled? That can kill performance.
I don't have alot of other suggestions other than watch CPU usage in task manager to see if there are any offending processes grabbing alot of usage.

I agree....

Keep an eye on the CPU for spikes... I would also run a spyware and virus scan... I always recommend Spybot S&D (my fav.). If you have a whole mess of that stuff loading it would hose your system too.

Do you keep documents (as opposed to shortcuts) on your desktop? Have you downloaded something to your desktop (an installation program, for example)? Check the size of your desktop (usually C:\documents and settings\your user name\desktop). You can also check the memory usage of the "explorer" task in task manager.

What you need to do is this...

1). Update your memory to 2GB

2). Download Ccleaner:
http://www.ccleaner.com/
Run this to clear out any temp files, once done try and defrag your drive, if possible do a defrag on bootup.

Please post back if you have any more problems or questions.

TonytheTiger's suggestion don't keep Folders on the Desktop as this greatly hinders performance.
