Stop e-mails from reaching your server

By tchieng ·
We recently have been receiving tons of virus-attached e-mails from this one bogus e-mail address: jan@prodigy.net.mx. I have configured my e-mail server to reject all incoming mails from this server's IP address. E-mails from this server are not getting through (I think), but I can still see in the error log that they are still attempting to send us crap everyday (probably wasting our bandwidth and server resrouces)! Is there anything we can do (legally) to stop them, or do I just live with it!

Thanks

2 things you can do.
1. contact prodigy.net.mx and have them stop it. If they are any good they will.
2. Call your ISP. Tell them what's going on and they should be able to put a filter on your account to keep them from ever getting to you. They'll call the other site because they want to keep from getting hit by those packets.
If your ISP won't take those steps, get another ISP.

Filter at the router or, as stated above, work with your ISP and have them filter at their router. This is the quickest resolution.

It can be handled at the TCP/IP level, but you'll want to follow the above suggestions first.

Everyone above is correct. FYI though, if you have a Checkpoint FW-1 in place, creating a Domain object that specifies that email domain and set it up to drop or reject silently on SMTP connections to the mail server works really good.
