Stopping and starting services remotely

By scott ·
I need to stop and start 6 services on about 50 servers remotely. Is there a simple way I can accomplish this?

There are a couple of options

You can run server manager on a Windows NT / 2000 PC and stop and start the services that way.

You could use remote control software to control the servers in question and start/stop the services that way.

If it is something that needs to be done on a regular basis then schedule a job on the server using either AT (for NT 4) or schedule jobs under control panel on Windows 2000.
Just put the details of the services into a batch file (e.g. NET STOP SPOOLER and then on the next line NET START SPOOLER)
and then schedule the batch file to run at the descired time.

Regards,

Hi

Another option is to use NETSVC or SC from the NT Resource Kit.

NETSVC \\server servicename /stop
SC \\server stop servicename

or, of course, start

If you've got a file with the list of servers in it, you could use a for loop to do the donkey work...

for /f %a in (servers.txt) do netsvc \\%a servicename /stop

If you want an all-singing all-dancing batch file to do it all, let me know

Richard
