Stopping Win98 users with NT server

By steven ·
I'm looking to stop my users from accessing the Internet through our DSL Line. They are running Win98 and installing AOL disks overwriting my portal setup for our DSL line, and therefore allowing them to get online. How can I stop them, without removing their CD ROM drives? Is there a WinNT 4.0 solution?

You might try setting up either a mandatory or a roaming profile that int eh permissions of the profile that they need admin rights to install anything on their computers.

Locking down the ports would work, but that does it for everyone, inlucing yourself. I would more then likely go with a firewall program to allow you to configure specific IPs to pass through or not. Something like lockdown or network ice.

Goodluck to you

Use a firewall that will deny access to the internet to all except the proxy server.
Now you can deny or allow who has access to the internet through nt. That is what I did.

Setup a sytem policy named "config.pol" and save it on the PDC server in "winnt\system32\rep\inport\script\" folder.
Make sure that in the network properties under client for Microsoft networks the box log on to windows NT domain is checked.
When you set up the policy make sure you run the system policy editor from a win98 machine (you can find it on the WIN98 CD-rom resource kit).
In the policy editor create one policy for the administrator account that has no restrictions.
Then for the default Machine restrict the fallowing:
1.Require validation from network for windows access.
Under default user restrict the fallowing:
1.remove run command
2.disable registry editing tools
3.only run allowed windows application , then add the applications you want your users to be able to run.

Could you please clarify further how your network and portal are setup ie using which Network OS and whether there is a Proxy ? Are you just interested in blocking users from using the CDROM to install AOL or more ?

Thanks !!!!
