strange copy after saving Excel file

By TL32 ·
Hi all: I have been noticing that there are multiple copies of a plain file type after users modify an Excel file. There's no file type name and the size of the file is almost identical to the Excel file. It doesn't create a problem fo rmy users, but it's annoying to see so many copies taking room on the server. Could anyone offer any help please? Thank you.

The Microsoft Office applications have the ability to create automatic recovery files. What these are is basically just a copy of the document or spreadsheet automatically saved periodically. These auto-recovery documents are just as you describe. Ordinarily these backup documents are automatically deleted when the user exits the application normally. If the user's computer reboots without shutting down (via power switch or BSOD), the file remains and is used for automatic recovery. You can accumulate more of these backup documents if your users have rights to add and update documents on the server but not to delete. In that case, Office can't delete the recovery files and they just accumulate. Could that be what's happening here?

Thank you very much. I ended up re-creating the folder and not messing with the attribute.

under tools and options there is a save tab that will allow you to turn this feature off. You will probably have to do this on each application and on each individual machine.

Stevecottle, that's exactly what happened because I removed right from users to delete files in the folder. Thanks.
