Swap space when installing Caldera 2.3

By gtork ·
When installing Caldera 2.3 using the LIZARD, I am trying to create swap partitions. I go into Custom Partitions and I am able to setup 3 125MB Swap partitions (I have also tried 1 384MB Swap partition). When it formats the partitions, the Swap partitions are checked. However, after the install completes and I login as root, I open a terminal window and type free. It is showing a 0 for Total swap size. I have reinstalled several times. I am not that familiar with Linux yet. So, I hope the fix is just something I am doing wrong. Any help is appreciated.

First, in the 2.2 kernels a swap partition is limited to 128Megs.

You should check /etc/fstab that will tell you what partitions are mounted automagically at boot time

do the "df" command will tell you which partitions are actually mounted andhow much space is free (don't be surprised to find most of your swap is free)

also doing the "top" command will not only show you all the processes running on your system but will also tell you the total memory useage as well as swap.

Once you make the partitions, you have to make sure they are recognized by linux as Swap partitions. Swap partitions have an id of 81 I believe -

Next, you have to turn the partitions on with the swapon command.

Instructions to do this, and tomake swapon a permanent part of your system start are on Caldera's Web site. Try these links:
Creating swap files after installation (Ref. #981001-0008)

COL 2.3 seems slow or sluggish (Ref. #990920-0001)

If I recall, the Caldera manual didn't say much about setting up a swap file or partition. Definitely unclear for newbies. I used partition magic for the same task, BTW.
