swapping NT server s/w

By prssmith ·
a question about swapping machines, suggested using a BDC for the accounts and promoting it to PDC, then replace the BDC machine. My question is: what if you only have 1 machine, PDC, and want to upgrade the software, i.e. reinstall NTServer like from eval copy to retail, and keep security ID's. How to install software as same Domain and user names.... I'm stuck with the SID part.?

You can't. When you install the PDc it creates a unique SID. If you reinstall server as a PDC you create a new SID. Nothing you can do about it. You can add the BDC and do it that way, but if there is only one computer (the PDC) there should be no bigdeal about starting over. The SID doesn't affect the software you have already loaded, you can simply reload it after the fresh install.
