Switching from workgroup to domain

By bmchivers ·
Many our users were originally installed to the default "workgroup". We are now implementing Microsoft Exchange which requires domain login. We are having difficulty finding a clean strategy to convert users to the domain login while retaining their existing user profile. We can copy the profile, but the desktop display properties are not transferred and some applications (specifically Outlook 2000) will not run.

What kind of workstations are you running?? That will determine what kind of solution you will need.

What you're running across is the difference between a username of machine\user and domain\user. Both will create two different profiles from the default user. I can't think of a way to make the domain account use the machines account, or I guess for a lack of better terms, import the local users to the domain.

I would tihnk that after registering the macine, you can copy their folder under profiles to their home folder on the network, so they next time they login, they are not created anew user.dat from the default user profile, but rather pushed from what you just copied to the network.

As far as outlook goes, That sounds like they're part of just the users group and nothing more, and you need to get them into a group that gives them a little more priveledges on the station. Things like the display properties and settings the clock are also affected by this.

Good luck to you

Mark
