SysAdmin + Java Developer =??

By dalbert ·
I am new to the IT field. I was taking a class in Java programming when I got the opportunity to intern as a systems administrator (assistant) in a graphics company in NYC. Here I have been learning basic networking (NT and Unix) and doing user support (mac), and the opportunity here is to continue learning operating systems and storage issues. I love dealing with people (clearly my strongest skill set) and have LOTS of experience in the medical field doing so. I also enjoy the quasi-creative side of programming and the challenges of systems admin, but I am concerned about making a living in this field with so little experience. I need to decide on what to take some classes in, and I am perplexed by the fork in the road in front of me. Is there a management/sysadmin/developer market out there that I can aim for?

SysAdmin + Java Developer =??

you say that dealing with people is your strongest suit. If that is the case then I would suggest that you concentrate your energies on trying to get a paying position doing user support (i.e. helpdesk). You would be amazed at the opportunities thatthere are for creativity and ingenuity when you are faced with the prospect of some poor client whose whole life has just flashed before their eyes because (for instance) the server failed just as they were saving a document and destroyed it (in their eyes).

You would also be amazed at how great you feel when a well timed backup brings back most of their hard work and you look like a genius :-)

I have worked in management, development and support and I can honestly say that the most fun I had was when I did user support. The best part of it is that you can often get in somewhere with little more than the willingness to learn and to work for peanuts (at least in the beginning)

Just one man's opinion

You can aim for anything you want. Just make sure you're facing in the right direction.
